July 4th is right around the corner, and the law firm of Price Benowitz LLP knows that while this is a very celebratory time of year, it can also be a dangerous one. Year in and Year out July 4th has increased frequency of DUI stops compared to other days because of the nature of the celebrations that take place. Criminal defense attorney Shawn Sukumar has some tips on how to stay safe during the upcoming Holiday.
The most important thing to do is simple, if youre drinking just dont drive, Sukumar says. Its very, very easy to find a designated driver, take cabs, take metro, take the buses; do whatever you can. The police will be at every major bar area, theyll be out everywhere.
Holidays like the 4th of July, Christmas, and Thanksgiving typically see spikes in the number of DUIs for a couple of reasons. They are National Holidays they typically revolve around some sort of celebration, but also because the Police are out in greater numbers during this time knowing that people might be more likely to drive under the influence than normal.
They will be in the popular bar and congregating areas around the city, Mr. Sukumar said when asked where someone might expect to encounter a DUI checkpoint. But they will also be on the roads people must take to leave Washington D.C. to head back out to Maryland and Virginia. Always assume that they are everywhere, you cant just think ahead. Find some way to get around, even if you dont plan on drinking at all, because the increased police presence and potential roadblocks will make traveling by car a major inconvenience.
As a result of the increased police presence, traffic is expected to be much more difficult to manage than it is during a typical Wednesday evening. We advise you to take alternate means of transportation to avoid getting caught in any Holiday celebration traffic.
July 4th also causes some complications for the rest of the legal system when it falls on a weekday like it does this year. The courts will be closed on Wednesday, meaning that if you commit a serious crime on July 3rd, you will have to wait until July 5th to have your case heard before a judge. This also applies to those who commit a crime while already on probation or parole.
